Transforming Health Care: Royal Government's Bold Steps to Enhance Public Health Services

Phnom Penh: In a determined effort to prioritize public health, the Royal Government of the 7th National Assembly has embarked on a mission to enhance the health and well-being of its citizens. Recognizing the critical importance of frontline health services, the government has set clear objectives aimed at strengthening the capacity of health centers and district referral hospitals across the country.

Since the beginning of their term, significant strides have been made in this initiative. In 2024, the Royal Government successfully recruited 700 health workers, marking a significant step towards improving healthcare delivery. The recruitment efforts are set to continue, with plans to bring on board an additional 650 health workers in 2025. This influx of personnel is expected to enhance the efficiency and capacity of health centers, paving the way for the introduction of 24-hour health services in the near future.

Financial support plays a crucial role in these advancements. The government has allocated a substantial budget of over 30 billion riels for 2024, complemented by a special 18-million US dollar fund for 2025 and subsequent years. This funding is dedicated to increasing the supply of medications for treating high blood pressure and diabetes. Previously, patients were limited to receiving medications for just one week; however, due to these changes, they can now obtain prescriptions for up to one month in certain areas. This development not only alleviates the burden on patients, who no longer need to visit health centers multiple times a month, but it also saves them valuable time and resources.

Moreover, the Royal Government has recognized the urgent need to enhance the capabilities of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) at Level 2 District Referral Hospitals. By allocating over 18 million US dollars in 2025 for this purpose, the government aims to ensure that patients requiring urgent surgery can receive timely care without the delays typically associated with transferring them to provincial hospitals.

These accomplishments are just a glimpse into the broader efforts being undertaken by the Royal Government, with the Ministry of Health at the forefront. Over the past year, significant progress has been made to strengthen and improve the health sector at all levels throughout the Kingdom of Cambodia, creating a foundation for a healthier future for its citizens.
